SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1855 PISTOL CARBINE. Cal. 58. NSN. 12” part oct bbl. Standard Springfield markings on lockplate dated 1855 on tail of lockplate & bbl tang. The number “16” appears on the buttcap of the pistol and “2” appears on the yoke of the stock. 3-leaf rear sight is intact. Only 4,021 of these were made, most of them in the first year of production, 1855. Many of these were issued to the cavalry units in the western United States before the Civil War. CONDITION: Gray patina overall with areas of surface rust with cleaning on the primer cover and lockplate. Brass parts show a dark patina with some corrosion. Stock has numerous dents and scratches, with initials on the left side. “JS” cartouche on left side of stock. Maynard primer cover catch is broken. A washer has been added to the stock catch.
