RARE SPRINGFIELD SECOND MODEL OFFICER’S MODEL RIFLE. Cal. 45/70. NSN. 26” rnd bbl. Standard Springfield markings on bbl, breechblock, and lockplate. “SWP” cartouche dated 1881 on left side of stock. The date 1881 is also stamped on receiver, where serial number is normally found. Receiver, lock, trigger guard, buttplate, forearm tip, and bbl band are engraved. Second type sight with short oval base is installed on top of wrist, which is checkered. Forearm and detachable pistol grip are also checkered. The hickory ramrod has the proper nickel-plated fittings on both ends. Pistol grip was patented by Frank W. Freund. Springfield failed to pay him for his rights; he sued and eventually won $20,000 for this misuse. Only 250 of these second models were made. There are no markings to indicate orig owner. All of these were made on special order. CONDITION: Good to very good. Smooth gray/brown patina overall. Traces of blue show on the bbl. Most of the plating remains on the forearm tip and cleaning rod. Stock shows light dents and scratches, but is still solid. Mechanically fine. Bore is lightly pitted.
