JOHNSON COMMITTEE OF SAFETY FLINTLOCK MUSKET. NSN. 70 Cal. 42-1/2” rnd bbl with bayonet lug at the bottom of the muzzle. The brass furniture is a Brown Bess style and may be from that source. The stock has shell carving at the rear bbl tang and a raised engraved silver thumb piece. The metal lockplate is engraved in script “Johnson” in front of the hammer. The lower stepped rear of the lockplate is engraved with light scrolls. There is no sling swivel in the triggerguard and no provision for one at the front of the stock. The lockplate appears to be an orig flintlock configuration. There are filed III marks on the inside of the pan and rear of the hammer neck. The frizzen has no bridle. Seth Johnson of Old Rutland, Mass. was a known maker of Committee of Safety muskets and James Johnson was a public gunsmith at Williamsburg, Virginia during the Revolutionary War, but we favor the former as the actual maker. CONDITION: Fine. Even brown patina and moderate pitting around the breech. Stock has minor cracks at the front of the lock with repairs to a crack at the top of the butt and another at the front lock screw. Mechanically fine. 4-60225 FS734 (8,000-10,000)
