SPECTACULAR SPECIAL ORDER ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 109715. Fabulous ’66 with special order 28″ oct bbl, full magazine, half nickel front sight, early style 900-yard ladder rear sight with exposed tension spring with recess in the top flat & a very early mid-range tang sight with 3-1/2″ staff. It is mounted with extremely fine, about 3X, highly figured burl American walnut with early style checkered forearm & straight grip stock with brass buttplate with trap containing a 4-piece brass & iron wiping rod. Forend cap & stock have factory sling swivels. Receiver, forend cap & buttplate tang are beautifully engraved with full coverage on both sides. The left side has the large vignette of a Mexican eagle perched on cactus holding a snake, completely surrounded by wonderfully executed intertwined foliate arabesque patterns with larger patterns on the front flats. Right side has altogether different patterns of intertwined foliate arabesque engraving with a blank rnd panel on the sideplate & a small elliptical panel on the front flat. Top of the receiver has a fan over the receiver ring with two more at the back edge with smaller flourishes of arabesque patterns. Bottom of the receiver has a flourish & border patterns on the bottom of the carrier & a figure-8 with mirror image fans around the timing screws. This exact pattern is featured on a saddle ring carbine serial #107801 on p. 87 of Winchester Engraving, Wilson and is attributed to either Conrad or John Ulrich. Trigger is the unusual pointed style with the oval tip. Left side of the lower tang, under the wood is stamped with the assembly number “23 ER” with two “X”‘s. Number “23” also appears in the top tang channel of the buttstock & again inside the toe of the buttplate. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain 95-97% strong bright orig blue with a light coating of old dried oil. There are a few small nicks about mid-point on the top flat. Receiver retains traces of orig silver plating with strong plating under the wood. Wood is sound with minor nicks & scratches with one heavier scratch on the right side of the buttstock with a series of shallow gouges near the toe. Checkering on stock & forearm have a few small bruises with a couple small gouges on the forestock & overall retains 95-96% strong bright orig piano varnish finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-57133 JR707 (40,000-70,000)
