COW SKULL AND MEDICINE POUCH, PLAINS LATE 19TH CENTURY. Owner believes this could be Apache as per representation by the Moon family. 1) Domestic cow skull with “tipped” horns. Tips of cow horns were often sawed off to lessen potential danger from the live animal. Indians used cow or steer skulls because they didi not have access to buffalo. Red rings circle the eye sockets. Owner says that, according to Moon and his family, this belonged to Geronimo. This skull is pictured in two photographs by Carl Moon, both entitled The Medicine Man; [Driebe: 204, 205]. Size: 20” long x 2’ wide. CONDITION: Three missing teeth, surface of bone and horns weathered; pc of missing bone from the end of nasal area. 2) Medicine pouch of tanned hide, mouth sewn closed, fringes sewn into opening. Contents of pouch unknown. Size: 13” long. CONDITION: Surface grime, leather somewhat desiccated. 4-55220 (3,000-6,000)
