ENGRAVED MODEL 1860 HENRY LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 4783. Typical Henry rifle with 24-1/4″ oct bbl with integral magazine, German silver front sight and 900 yard Henry ladder rear sight with no dovetail on the receiver. It has straight grain stock with factory sling swivel on the left side and corresponding staple on the left side of the bbl. The receiver is beautifully engraved in standard L.D. Nimschke pattern consisting of rich scrolls of foliate arabesque patterns with a blank center panel on the side plates. The forward flats are matching engraved with scrolls of intertwined foliate arabesque patterns, all with punch dot background. It has three fine lines at the front & rear edges of the receiver, the top flat is lightly engraved and the top tang is beautifully engraved. The exact patterns are pictured on page 49 of Winchester Engraving, Wilson. The serial number appears on the left side of the lower tang under the wood. The stock and buttplate are modern day replacements and the lever appears to be from an 1866 rifle as it is short in making contact with the latch. The two top tang screws are orig style Henry screws with the lower tang screw and buttplate screws being replacements. CONDITION: Good. Bbl & magazine tube retain a mottled silver/brown patina having recently been cleaned. Rotating tip of the magazine tube has several small dents. There are small dents on each side of the bbl by the sight. Receiver shows moderate wear with slightly rounded corners and some hammer marks on the top of both sideplates. Stock is a poor fit with gaps around the receiver and tips of the tangs. The buttplate has been fiber-glassed to fit. Mechanics are fine, worn dark bore. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54644 JR126 (12,500-22,500)
