*PROTOTYPE WINCHESTER MODEL 70 CUSTOM EXPRESS BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 300 Petersen. SN G1750. Beautiful custom shop rifle with 26″ tapered rnd bbl, made without sights. It has the pre-64 claw extractor bolt & safety. It is mounted in a heavier than usual select grain 1-pc stock with coarse checkering and semi-pistol grip with a thick old English brown pad. The stock has two reinforcing cross bolts with engraved heads. The bbl has both the “WP” proof and custom shop proof. The receiver does not have a proof mark. The floorplate is marked “-CUSTOM EXPRESS-” and it has safari sling swivel on the bbl with an inletted swivel base on the stock. Accompanied by a magazine The Complete Book of Winchester’s Model 70, Petersen Publishing, which contains an article beginning on page 23 highlighting the Peter & Patty Murray Collection. On page 25 are photographs of this rifle. Also accompanying is a Winchester invoice dated 11/09/94 from P.M. Air Services Ltd., Huntington Beach, CA ordering a 300 Petersen rifle. Also included is a letter dated September 26, 1995 to P.M. Air Service advising that the rifle would not be produced in that caliber and they were canceling the order. There is also included a Winchester invoice and packing list both dated 11/14/95 transferring this rifle to P.M. Air Services marked for Peter Murray. One additional letter accompanies, this one from U.S. Repeating Arms Co. dated 11/13/95 to Peter Murray identifying this rifle and stating that the Winchester Custom Shop, along with the A-Square Company had designed this rifle predicated on the supposition that they could use the name “Petersen” but that liability problems had caused Mr. Petersen to withdraw his permission to use the name and therefore the rifle was never produced. The letter states that the bbl is heavier style by A-Square and that the magazine, follower and receiver were special designed with special internal cuts. Additionally accompanying is a dummy cartridge with A-Square head stamp. The cartridge envelope has a typed paper attached stating that this cartridge was designed in 1993 by Lt. Col. Arthur B. Alphin and named for Mr. Robert Petersen. Also accompanying is a red & white plastic disc from the Murray Collection and a laminated typed paper, which states that this is the only Model 70 ever made in this caliber, and was shown at various shows before being discontinued. It also states that the ammunition is still being made by A-Square under the “300 Pegasus” name. CONDITION: As new, probably unfired, retaining virtually all its orig factory finish to both metal & wood. 4-53779 JR66 (3,000-5,000)
