COLT CAVALRY SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 114721. Fine 9th or 10th contract single action with 7-1/2″ bbl, blue & case colored with 1-piece walnut grips. The frame has the “US” marking on the left side and 3-line patent markings. The grips have a fine, sharp, oval Frank Heath cartouche on the left side under the date “1885”. The right side has a rectangular cartouche that appears to be “JTC”. The “DFC” sub-inspector marks appear on the bbl, frame and cylinder. There is also a small “G” below the serial number on the trigger guard and back strap. This revolver, while not specifically identified by serial number in Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers”, Kopec & Fenn, it is in the range of many that were issued to active cavalry units as well as the New York Militia. The “G” marking, according to Kopec, is a mystery but believed to denote revolvers that were destined for the U.S. government. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains 88-90% strong bright original blue with muzzle wear primarily on the left side with a thin spot about mid-point and slight wear from the ejector rod. Frame retains about 90% original case colors, faded to silver on the high points of the recoil shield and top strap, strong and bright elsewhere, brilliant in sheltered areas. Hammer retains 60-70% bright case colors. Backstrap retains about 50% original blue, flaked and worn to light patina. Trigger guard retains about 90% original blue, thin on the trigger bow and front strap. Ejector rod housing retains about 80% blue, strong and bright in the gullets, thin on the outside edge. Cylinder retains 75-80% thin original blue, strong and bright in the flutes. Frame screws retain most of their original factory blue. Grips are sound, showing moderate edge wear and light chipping with some light gouging on the right side, otherwise retain about 75% varnish on the right side and 90% on the left side. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. A truly great and all original cavalry single action. 4-53463 JR789 (14,000-22,000)
