UNUSUAL LARGE EARLY HAND AXE. Made of hand forged iron, the head is about 11″ long with an 8-1/4″ socket. The blade tapers from 2″ out to 6-1/8″ on the cutting edge, and has a sweeping front edge. The haft is about 1-1/2″ diameter and 18-1/4″ from the end of the socket. Overall length is 26-5/8″. There are five rectangular stamps in a regular geometric pattern on the left side of the blade. CONDITION: About good. Head and socket are a deep, dark brown patina with crusty rust and heavy pitting. Socket has a large chip out of the bottom rear edge and the haft, probably an old replacement, is a little rough, but sound. 4-51350 JR881 (500-1,000)
