SCARCE MEXICAN BORDER CONNECTED SMITH & WESSON NEW MODEL #3 SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. Appears to be 44 Russian. SN 8084. Nickel finish with 6″ keyhole bbl, pinned half moon front sight with blued hammer & trigger guard and Smith & Wesson medallion ivory grips. The right side of the frame is inscribed, through the nickel, “Columbus / New Mexico / 1915”. It appears to have been done with a pantograph. This date and town correspond with the famous Poncho Villa raid on the United States which occurred in 1915 at Columbus, NM. CONDITION: Very fine, overall retains most of its strong original bright nickel finish with a couple of slightly battered screws and some scrapes on the front and back straps. The trigger guard, hammer & trigger have been nicely reblued. The grips are of more recent manufacture and have a beautiful light mellow ivory color. Mechanics are fine, cylinder is a little loose, strong bright bore with light to moderate pitting. 4-53476 JR873 (3,000-5,000)
