VERY RARE JONATHAN BROWNING HARMONICA RIFLE. Cal. 54. NSN. Rare and unusual rifle with 31-11/16″ heavy oct bbl, German silver blade dovetail front sight and Kentucky rifle style fixed rear sight. The top flat is marked “J.M. Browning” with the date “1853”. There are two iron guides on the bottom flat containing a replacement hickory ramrod. The receiver is rectangular brass with long brass integral top tang and a long iron trigger plate with pointed ends. The trigger guard is serpentine brass and acts also as a grip. It has a 6-1/8″ long curved back action lock with enclosed hammer and a corresponding length curved sideplate. It is all mounted in a 1-piece half stock of lightly figured maple with pewter nose cap and smooth crescent brass buttplate. It is fitted with single set trigger. The five chambers are enclosed in a solid 4-5/16″ x 2-3/16″ x 3/4″ block of steel with percussion nipples on the top side. The front edge, or opening of the chambers, has a recessed chamfered area around each chamber which corresponds with a male projection at the end of the bbl which effectively acts as a gas seal. The action is manual, in that when a chamber is fired a lever on the right side is rotated and the chamber manually advanced and the lever rotated down which cams the chamber forward over the gas seal. CONDITION: Very good, the iron retains a light cleaned mottled silver/brown patina with some scattered spots of light surface rust. The brass receiver, top tang & buttplate are a light mustard patina. The forestock has a crack and is missing a chip by the pin and a 2-5/8″ long sliver on the right side and the buttstock has a few grain checks, otherwise the wood is sound retaining a very old patina. The hammer does not appear to have a half cock or safety notch, otherwise the mechanics are fine. Strong bore with sharp rifling and light rust that may clean a lot better. 4-51990 JR790 (65,000-85,000)
