VERY RARE WINCHESTER HIGH WALL MUSKET. Cal. 45-70. SN 24520. Fine musket with 31-7/8” bbl, square base front sight with fine blade and ski jump wind-gage military rear sight. The bbl markings have brackets at each end that resemble a horizontal “Y” or chicken track. It has straight grain walnut wood with full-length forearm and straight stock with smooth musket buttplate. It has two bbl bands, the front of which has an integral sling loop with corresponding loop in the buttstock. The bottom of the forearm has an iron-wiping rod in the channel and the front band also is the base for a saber bayonet. The right side of the buttstock, at the buttplate, is stamped with a large number “20”. Accompanied by a saber bayonet without scabbard that has a 20-1/4” Yataghan blade with wide fuller and brass handle with fish scale grip and eagle pommel. The right ricasso is stamped with a large “B” and the left ricasso with a crown over “G”. Also accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this musket with 32” bbl and saber bayonet and indicating shipment May 1, 1888. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains about 95% original factory blue with slight wear at the muzzle from the bayonet and thinning above the rear band. Receiver retains 70-75% faded case colors with the balance silvery/brown patina. Lever retains case colors in sheltered areas and the hammer about 80% bright case colors. Wood is sound with minor nicks and scratches and retains most of its fine original finish. Fine mechanics, brilliant shiny bore. Bayonet is fine, being mostly silver metal color with light pitting on the lower one third of the blade. Handle is worn on the right side but retains great detail on the left side. A rare bayonet. 4-52920 JR400 (5,000-10,000)
