*BREATHTAKING ENGRAVED FACTORY DISPLAY MODEL WINCHESTER 1894 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 30 WCF (30-30). SN 128249. Spectacular gilt and nickel deluxe rifle with 26” rnd bbl, full magazine, standard front sight with screw and 3-leaf express rear sight. It has 3 to 4X center crotch cut American walnut wood with “H” style checkering and a capped pistol grip stock with a Winchester embossed hard rubber buttplate. The receiver, forend cap, upper and lower tangs are gold plated, while the rest of the metal is nickel-plated. The receiver is engraved in style “6”, probably by Ulrich, and consists of a large vignette of a standing Bighorn sheep in a mountain scene on the left side and a walking white tail buck vignette on the right side. The vignettes are enclosed in sweeping arabesque ribbons surrounded by very fine arabesque patterns with dbl borders consisting of a wavelet outer border and plain inner border. The front edges of the inner border also have fine scallop and dot patterns. The top of the receiver, down the top tang, floor plate and area surrounding the floor plate cutout are lightly engraved with matching arabesque patterns and sunburst flourishes fore and aft. The forend cap is matching engraved and there are light patterns over the chamber area. The engraving is executed in very fine detail, consistent with Ulrich work, befitting a factory exhibition piece. Accompanied by two Cody Firearms Museum letters identifying this rifle completely with nickel and gilt, $10.00 engraving and showing initial shipment March 10, 1904. Returns and shipments continued from 1904, in some cases several times a year, to various agents and dealers with the last shipment reported January 4, 1928. Most of the shipments indicate that they are a sample consignment for an exhibition showcase. The first letter is in two pages, dated May 13, 1987 and the other is a legal size letter dated September 9, 1998. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains 93-95% original nickel with a flaked spot over the chamber area turned to dark patina and fine pimpling with a couple of other small flaked spots over the rest of the bbl. Magazine tube retains about 90% original nickel with a worn spot just above the forend cap and scattered spots of patina with some fine pinpoint pimpling. Receiver retains about 95% bright gold plating with some edge wear and a worn spot at the tip of the top tang. Bolt, lever and hammer retain most of their original nickel-plating with a few scattered spots of patina showing through. Wood is sound with an area of light scrapes on the right side of the buttstock and minor light nicks and scratches, otherwise retains most of its original piano varnish finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-52556 JR302 (40,000-75,000)
