RARE C.B. HOLDEN SINGLE SHOT LONG RANGE TARGET RIFLE. Cal. Appears to be about 36 CF with a medium length bottleneck case. NSN. Fine long-range rifle with 28-1/8” tapered rnd bbl with large block front sight. The top is marked, in script, “C.B. Holden, Maker, Worcester, Mass” and there is a 1/4” wide knurled ring at the receiver end and at the muzzle. The bore has twelve lands & grooves that are Metford style rifling, right hand twist. It has a nickeled brass receiver with right side, front action lockplate and hammer and a dummy sideplate on the left side. The receiver has the unique falling block action with front lever, released by a spring-loaded button. It has a spring-loaded 2-pc firing pin with a unique spring loaded extractor that functions when the breech block is opened. The top front of the receiver is faceted with three flats and is uniquely engraved with foliate and arabesque very fine patterns. These dainty patterns are also on the tangs and buttplate tang. The bottom of the trigger guard and ball of the opening lever and firing pin bolster are engraved in foliate patterns with a sunburst on the trigger guard. The grip cap also has engraved foliate patterns. The lockplate and sideplate are beautifully engraved with about 50% coverage fine arabesque patterns with scalloped borders with fine dot borders around the frame. It has very highly figured American walnut 2-pc stock and forearm with extensively checkered round forearm and extended grip with engraved nickeled grip cap and a nickeled brass Swiss buttplate with faceted top tang and large ball ends with light engraving. It has a tang-mounted sight with 4” vernier blade and large eye cup. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 85-90% plum/blue finish, thin over the chamber area, missing the windage screw from the front sight. Receiver retains 88-90% strong original milky nickel finish with a worn spot by the firing pin bolster; wear on the opening lever and bottom of the trigger guard. Sideplate retains about 90% bluish case colors and the lockplate about 80% bluish case colors, brilliant in the sheltered area. Stock appears to have a small repair by the top tang, otherwise the wood is sound and retains most of its original bright varnish finish. Buttplate retains most of its original nickel on top, bottom and sides with the face, inside the crescent, worn away. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52500 JR633 (5,000-10,000)
