SCARCE IDENTIFIED STEPHEN GRANT UNDER LEVER DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. Cal. 8 bore. This massive, beautiful old shotgun with 34-1/4” fine pattern damascus bbls, round case colored receiver with back action locks, large checkered splinter forearm secured with a single wedge and straight stock with smooth steel buttplate is in its original oak and leather casing with compartments for the various parts and tools. The outside of the lid is embossed “Louis L. Lorrillard, Esq. / New York” and the inside of the lid has the makers label and a handwritten card indicating the charges for this shotgun. The case, in addition to the shotgun, contains a 3-pc BGI wood wiping rod, a complete set of reloading tools and a leather pouch with spare springs, a screw and two original firing pins in their little leather pouches. As noted, this shotgun was the property of Mr. Lorrillard who is recorded in the Grant files as having been the original purchaser in July 1872. In addition, he purchased two other Stephen Grant guns and his brother, one. This shotgun is reported by the consignor as being inherited from his father who had obtained it from a Mr. Bradford Norman of Newport, RI who was a hunting companion of the Lorillard’s. This shotgun was allegedly a gift from Mr. Norman to consignors’ father in the 1920’s. SN 5259. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retain 70-75% brown damascus pattern with bright shiny bores having scattered light pitting. Receiver and lockplates retain about 80% strong bright case colors faded toward the front of the receiver and back of the locks. Forearm has a large chip out of the right bbl channel, otherwise is sound as is the stock and both retain generous amounts of their original oil finish. The original case is fine with a broken and a couple of loose partitions. Tools are fine. 4-47874 JR523 (5,000-10,000)
