IDENTIFIED MODEL 1850 STAFF & FIELD OFFICERS SWORD TO 2ND LT. RICHARD (E.or C.) WILSON COMPANY B 12 NJ VOL INF. Agent marked “LAMBERT & MAST PHILA” etched on blade. Blade exhibits patriotic panels. Brown steel scabbard, brass mounts, shark skin grip with triple brass wire. Accompanying this lot is an envelope inscribed “KEEP, A NOTE TO HAM FROM HIS GRANDFATHER”. A note within reads “USED IN THE BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG, CHANCELLORVILLE & GETTYSBURG BY CAPTAIN R. E. (or C?) WILSON 1862, 1863”. New Jersey records indicate that Wilson was enlisted 7/9/1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant and on 9/4/1862 was commissioned into “B CO. NJ 12TH INFANTRY AND WAS DISMISSED ON APRIL 30, 1864”. Records of the 12th New Jersey Infantry does not indicate participation at Fredericksburg however, at Gettysburg Companies B etc. were used to repulse and capture a group of Confederate sharpshooters on the Emmitsburg Pike capturing six commissioned officers and 80 men, but at considerable loss. They were at the Battle of the Wilderness and Cold Harbor and also at Spottsylvania where a magnificent assault resulted in the capture of 3,000 Confederate prisoners and some 30 guns and the unit was also present with the army preceding the main assault on the Petersburg defenses.
