REMARKABLE LARGE WITCH CANDY CONTAINER. Germany. Very significant 15″ tall dressed witch candy container. Cardboard bodied Halloween figure with hand painted wooden legs and arms. Papier mache/compo head. Cardboard tube candy enclosure slides out at knee level. Witch is dressed in plaid print dress with black apron and red felt cape. Also wearing black muslin cap with red felt band. Her head is particularly well done with protruding nose and high relief cheeks. Typical German-style hand painting details include rosy cheeks and red mouth with missing teeth. Eye details produce a withering, searing glance. Original broom is very well done with hand carved handle and wrapped bristles below. This 1920s/1930s over-sized candy container is all based on the 1692 Witch Trials held in Salem, MA. SIZE: 15″ t. CONDITION: Very good plus. Retaining all original clothing. Some soiling to red cape does not detract from this important Halloween candy container. 1-13455 (1,000-1,500)
