IVES CLOCKWORK PREACHER. A wonderful toy from the latter part of the 1800s featuring a black gentleman preaching to the masses. This exceptional example came from England and as unusual as that sounds many American toys from this era found their way overseas to Europe. The wooden box is polychromed in an orange-red finish with vibrant yellow highlighting and brown accents. Toy is virtually in near mint, unplayed with condition and the clothing which often deteriorates with age is overall in pristine condition showing little signs if any of any fading and/or wear. The black figure has inset black pupiless glass eyes, wire rimmed glasses and a comical look about his face or a comical look about him. When the toy is wound and activated, he would lean forward slamming his right hand on the podium to make his point while turning his head from side to side glancing to the crowd that has gathered. SIZE: Approx. 10″ t. CONDITION: In very fine to near mint all original condition, some minor adjustments needed for figure to function properly. Clockwork mechanism is in working order, however lacking one small screw from left foot and wire from mechanism to body which enables figure to turn head. 1-12294 (3,500-5,500)
