BICYCLE COIN OPERATED GAMBLING TRADE STIMULATOR. Most likely made by either Waddell or Sun Manufacturing company, the latter who produced many varied showcases from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Fred Freid, in the 1960s, wrote an article describing and discussing the 10 most interesting and desirable machines that a collector could own, this being one of them. The bicycle being encased behind glass in a quartersawn oak cabinet with twisted rope trims is truly a unique and very appealing example. The ingenuity of the time period (early 1900s) utilized a bicycle with spinning wheels that allowed one to gamble for a reward usually of cigars, but sometimes other articles. Although this is not the rarest of gambling machines, it is one of the most appealing and highly sought after not only by collectors of coin operated devices but by those who also appreciate its art form. A nickel is deposited in the coin slot and the lever is pulled upwards causing the nickel to strike against a bell and the wheels to spin. Adding the numbers on both wheels one would compare the total to the reward chart (replaced paper) to see if one was a winner. Machine overall retains a wonderful original patina to wood finish. Bicycle itself is in very fine condition with some paper loss to wheels. Front handle/lever appears to have been re-nickeled. SIZE: 19-1/2″ w x 6″ d x 13-1/2″ h. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus. Lacking key for cash box. Small (approx. 2″ x 3″) wood slide above cash box missing. Small (approx. 2-1/2″ x 3/8″) metal or celluloid tag indicating maker missing from front panel. 1-11384 (7,000-9,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Fall 2011 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
