PATENT MODEL: TOY MONEY BOX MECHANICAL BANK. A truly unique piece of history and a singular opportunity. This patent model, circa 1878 represents a mechanical bank designed by B.M. Abell and F. Brecht. This bank was submitted to the U.S. Patent office and a patent for it was granted, but the bank was never put into production. It represents President Rutherford B. Hayes cast in brass standing with his arm outstretched and is mounted to a painted tin platform. The premise was that a coin was placed in his hand, and it would drop into the ballot box at his side as if he were casting a vote, falling into the tin platform below. The side of the bank is hand painted “Vote Early and Often” in gold. The bank is accompanied by its original patent tags marked with its patent number 200,885 granted on March 5, 1878, which was exactly one year to the day from the Hayes’ inauguration. It is also accompanied by copies of the original patent papers and spec sheet showing an illustration of the bank. The lot is further enhanced by copies of an article about this bank that appeared in Antique Toy World in September 1983, an MBCA newsletter containing a write-up on the bank, as well as letters from a former owner detailing some of the history, and one by Marc Olimpio who masterfully recreated the ballot box in 1996 that had been lost from the bank many years before as per the original patent papers and description. SIZE: 6-1/2″ h x 4-1/2″ l x 2-3/4″ w. CONDITION: Overall good to very good. Tin platform shows even wear and paint chips while the figure of Hayes appears to be very good. The ballot box, and glass globe holding the ballots are later additions, but faithful to the original. 1-11302 (15,000-20,000)
