CAILLE 50¢ NEW CENTURY DETROIT W/ORIGINAL MUSIC. In the early part of the 20th century it would almost be unheard of to encounter a 50¢ gambling machine! Obviously this type of machine was for the “well heeled” gentleman and more than likely was in a very exclusive setting. Furthermore, to have music in said device was not only to navigate gambling laws of the time but to make this machine less offensive, especially if ladies were present. Caille, located in Detroit, Michigan without a doubt made some of the most visually attractive gambling devices during this time period. Oftentimes the Caille firm utilized large ornate castings on the front facade, fancy coin entry heads and other cast iron appointments about the machine, all usually nickel plated and thus garnering a prospective gamblers eye. The iron castings on this machine have been copper plated and then a burnished black oxide applied giving a much richer look as opposed to a bright nickel finish. As mentioned, music was added to circumvent gambling laws. In this case the player was only purchasing a tune and not really gambling. Over the years of use, frequently music boxes for one reason or another were removed from these machines and it is a rarity to find a proper 8-tune music box intact and in operational condition. The machine retains all the correct linkage as well as an external lever to disengage the music box from activating. If a player decided to deposit a coin in all slots he would be guaranteed to win and listen to music as an added bonus. However, if red or black came up, only a 2-1 payout would occur. Thus, although he won, in reality he lost. The odds are determined by the number of color slots on the paper mounted on tin wheel (new paper). The fewer the colors, the greater the odds/payout. The wooden cabinet is constructed of quarter-sawn oak, which has been professionally refinished and the castings have been professionally re-plated to there original appearance. SIZE: Approx. 23-1/2″ w x 14″ d x 68″ h. CONDITION: Overall very fine + restored condition. Music box has been professionally cleaned and tuned.
