YELLOW KID MAGAZINE, VOL. I, NO. 6. The Yellow Kid Magazine was another merchandising effort to cash in on the Yellow Kid craze. The first issue debuted on March 20, 1897 as a bi-weekly 48-page magazine with front and rear cover art by R.F. Outcault and was published by Howard, Ainslee Co. of New York. After the ninth issue, the title was changed to “The Yellow Book”, was published on a monthly basis and no longer featured Outcault illustrated covers. The early issues are therefore exceedingly rare to come by and are highly collectible. This issue is dated June 5, 1897 and has front cover art of a sea captain and the Yellow Kid holding a spyglass. The caption reads “Me an de Captain is Runnin dis ship”. Back cover art is an ad for the New York Sunday Journal, which was repeated for all first nine issues. SIZE: 7″ w. x 10-1/4″ l. CONDITION: Good to very good. 1-9490 (1,000-1,500) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Fall 2009 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
