ROCKET SCALE MODEL TRAIN WITH TENDER. An improvement on the earlier “Locomotion”, Stephenson & Co produced the Rocket in 1829 for the Rainhill Trials. The contest was between five locomotives (two of which withdrew early). By the end of the third day, the Rocket was the only one left. It boasted being able to cover 35 miles in 3 hours, 12 minutes while hauling 13 tons of cargo. The improvement entailed rotating the traditionally vertical cylinders to a 35 degree incline in an attempt to increase the heating surface. Boiler is slatted wood with 4 large wheels, pulling a 4-wheel tender. SIZE: 17″ l. CONDITION: Overall very good. 1-7418 (2,000-3,000)
