UNSIGNED (American, Mid 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF A SHIP’S CAPTAIN. Outstanding oil on wood panel 3/4 portrait of a sea captain holding a large brass & wood telescope in one hand with an open gesture with his other hand. Over his right shoulder his ship is seen flying a red Canadian flag with sails half up. A lighthouse with building is seen on low hill in distance with a man looking out with telescope on shore. A small rowboat with five men approach the ship. The captain is seen with his dark blue/black coat having brass buttons, a tan vest and white shirt. Housed in a period gilt wood deep frame. On reverse of panel are three labels, two of which are Kennedy Galleries, Inc. NYC labels, one indicating the background scene as Halifax, Nova Scotia Harbor, which coincides with period newspaper that is glued to the back of the panel. SIZE: 30-3/4″ x 24-3/4″. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: Very good, one old canvas patch to crack on reverse, some inpainting. 9-24614 (8,000-12,000)
