IMPORTANT PHILADELPHIA FEDERAL INLAID MAHOGANY JOHN J. PARRY TALL CASE CLOCK. Circa 1800. Swan’s neck pediment with reeded rosettes alternating with urn form finials. Astragal arch door with string inlays flanked by free standing colonettes joined to the cove molded case with figured mahogany frieze bordered with zigzag string inlays, throat fitted with astragal arched door flanked by acanthus carved reeded free standing columns joined to the cove molded box base raised on flared French feet with scalloped returns. Painted enameled face with double Arabic chapter ring, the seconds ring outside of the hour numerals, centering time and strike apertures beneath a subsidiary seconds dial above a calendar aperture, with the name “John J. Parry./PHILAD A” beneath. Face with gold gilt scrolling spandrels, the whole surmounted by arched moon phase dial. With original 8 day time and strike brass movement. Offered with pendulum, weights and door key. Note: John J. Parry (1773-1835), a nephew of David Rittenhouse’s second wife, Hannah Jacobs. Upon the death of David Rittenhouse in 1796 John Parry inherited the clock maker’s tools. Parry was in business in Philadelphia from 1794 until his death in 1835. It is not unreasonable to suggest that John Parry apprenticed with/under David Rittenhouse. SIZE: 7′ 11″ h x 14-1/2″ w of throat x 9-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From a private Vermont collection. CONDITION: Movement and saddle board original. Case professionally cleaned and polished with minor and minimal shrinkage cracks in box base and with small losses to string inlays. Case supports for movement have been drilled on proper left side. Otherwise all very good. 9-22821 (15,000-20,000)
