IMPORTANT CONNECTICUT CHIPPENDALE BOWFRONT INLAID MAHOGANY CHEST OF DRAWERS. Circa 1800. Transitional chest possibly from Eastern Connecticut fitted with four graduated long drawers, each with simulated rectangular panels with fan inlaid spandrels and contrasting string inlaid borders. Edges of the top and base also with string inlays. The whole raised on ogee bracket feet with sharp scalloped and cusped returns. Additionally mounted with an unusual lollipop central pendant flanked by scrolls and with a central fan inlaid rondel. Note, chest comprised of mahogany veneers over cherry, birch and white pine. Case sides and drawer dividers are cherry. Drawer bottoms are chestnut. Bowed drawer fronts laminated. SIZE: 35″ h x 44″ w overall x 23-1/4″ d. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Chest retains early cleaned surfaces. Majority of glue blocks intact. One return missing on central pendant. Hardware is replaced, but of correct style. Escutcheons appear original.
