GOTHIC STYLE HEAVILY CARVED SPANISH WALNUT COFFER. 18th and 19th century. Comprised of elements spanning a 200 year period. The coffer with hinged lid carved with the Grand Magisterial Arms of the Maltese Langue of Castille-Leon quartered by Aragon and Sicily, flanked by Gothic letters beneath crowns beneath Gothic arches. The lid corners carved with a rampant lion and turreted castles. Bottom border with quatrefoil rosettes. The central panel (of 17th or 18th century origins) carved overall with rosettes over Gothic arches headed by pairs of winged griffins. The flanking pilasters each with three panels carved with mythological winged creatures. Literature: the carved coat of arms in center of lid is pictured on the frontice of The Spain of Ferdinand and Isabella translated and edited by Benjamin Keen, Rutgers University Press. SIZE: 25-1/2″ h x 55-1/2″ l x 21″ d. CONDITION: The coffer with dark opaque patina. It is our belief that the dovetailed backboard and the central panel at the front of the coffer originate from the period of the 17th and 18th century, and that the remaining elements ie, lid, pilasters and side panels, are of early to mid 19th century origins. This is evidenced by distinctive characteristics within the carved elements and by the hand hewn nature of the backboard and central panel. Very good overall. 9-20375 (3,000-5,000)
