BRASS BOUND ROSEWOOD LAP DESK, NOAH BROOKS. 1854. Chelsea Massachusetts. The rectangular hinged lid inset with a brass cartouche engraved “Noah Brooks/ From/ a few friends/ Chelsea May 8th 1854”. The lid opening to an interior fitted with a leather lined, tooled and gile writing surface, opening to a well, additionally fitted with two lidded compartments, a compartment with pen tray flanked by open compartments for ink wells. One original inkwell remains. The rosewood desk brass bound overall and fitted with inset brass carrying handles and inset cartouche escutcheon. SIZE: h. 7-1/2″ x l. 19-7/8″ d. 11-3/4″ PROVENANCE: Noah Brooks became a reporter in the Civil War for the Sacramento Daily Union and a confidant of Abraham Lincoln. He was also author of the book, “LINCOLN OBSERVED Civil War Dispatches of Noah Brooks”. CONDITION: The lid with shrinkage crack. Box retains old surfaces that have been oversprayed.
