STATE OF MAINE ALBUM QUILT. Circa 1852. Designed and sewn by the lady’s sewing circle of Cumberland Center. This lovely example with alternating and intricately wrought needlework panels, each signed by the artist alternating with quilted panels of exceptional folk art representations such as watermelons, dancing figures within a square, four individuals with outstretched arms within a circle, leafy sprays, wreath, and pinwheel designs. The needle-point panels signed by various members of the sewing group including: Joann Blanchard, A.G. Morse, G.F. Ridcout, Hellen E. Blanchard, Sarah E. Lountser, Harriet E. Smith, H.E Merrill, Sarah Blanchard, Corrlena M. Soule, Margaret Wilson, Sallucia A. Soule among others. SIZE: 90″l. x 84″w. PROVENANCE: Descended in the Merrill family of Cumberland Center, Maine. Mrs. H.B. Merrill to Henrietta Buxton Merrill to Sally Merrill to consignor. CONDITION: Structurally in very good condition overall. Some minor spot staining throughout.
