PAUL JOANOVITCH (Serbia/Austria, 1859-1957) THE RESTING SENTINEL. Oil on wood panel scene shows a Middle Eastern man smoking a long pipe seated on a bench with stucco and brick wall background. He is in fancy attire wearing two pistols at waistline and hung on a hook behind him is his rifle and fancy accessories. Signed lower right. Housed in an Eastlake gilt and ebonized frame with gilt wood artist plaque. On the reverse of the panel is a Plaza Art Galleries, New York City label and a partial label “From the Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Tony Andress”. A larger version of this scene was sold at Christie’s, New York in 2005. SIZE: 16-1/2″ x 10-1/4″. CONDITION: Very good. 9-99001 (40,000-60,000)
