MANNER OF ANDREA SACCHI (Italian, 1598-1661) TWO WORKS: POPE PIUS V & SAINT FILIPPO NERI. Research indicates that it was exhibited January 5th-30th, 1933 and the owner was Harold Osgood Whitney of Watertown, MA. and at the time it was Attributed to Andrea Sacchi. 2) Pope Pius V, (1504-1572) born Antonio Ghislieri (from 1518 called Michele Ghislieri, O.P.), was Pope from 1566 to 1572, and is a saint of the Catholic Church. He is chiefly notable for his role in the Council of Trent, the Counter-Reformation, and the standardisation of the liturgy. Pius V declared Thomas Aquinas a Doctor of the Church and patronised prominent sacred music composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. The portrait depicts a standing older man looking upwards holding a white lily. At his feet is a fancy covered urn and he wears a gold decorated white robe with religious images. Above his head are two winged cherub faces. NOTE: On reverse of stretcher is a Fogg Art Museum loan label No. 2776. Research indicates that it was exhibited January 5th-30th, 1933.
