UNSIGNED (American, 19th Century) ALLEGORICAL SCENE. Unframed oil on canvas shows a scene in a sunlit clearing of dense woods. A hunter with gun at the ready jumps up from behind a bush with his dog. He is pointing the gun over two women that are on the path and towards a fierce wolf like animal bearing teeth. The animal stands over another like animal. The women shown are such that one is lying with out features and the other is lying above with head up which may indicate the spirit. The scene evokes several interpretations by the viewer. SIZE: 27″ x 35″. CONDITION: Craquelure, relined with inpainting, very good. 9-96710 (1,500-2,500)
