RARE AND IMPORTANT STANFORD WHITE FRAME. Housing an oil on canvas portrait of a socialite by Florence Thaw (1864-1940). Thaw was a student of Abbott Thayer and exhibited in the Washington, D.C. area. Portrait depicts a young woman seated sideways to the viewer in a green dress with hands in lap. She looks towards the viewer and her auburn hair is in a stylish fashion of the time. Signed lower right. 7-1/2” wide frame has an outer ripple border, offset turret style molding, inner egg and darte molding with an inner most reeded edge. Original gilt surface. On reverse of frame is a partial label believed to be from the Pittsburgh Institute of Arts Annual Exhibition indicating artist, partial title and owner (Dow). Also a pencil inscription on frame from “PA Acad. Mrs. Dow 137 W. 47th”. SIZE: Overall is 53-1/2” h x 44-1/2” w. Inner is 40-1/4” x 30-1/2”. Painting is 40” x 30”. CONDITION: Frame: Some finish and gesso losses, generally in good condition. Painting: Surface dirt, in need of cleaning. 9-93964 (15,000-25,000)
