FINE MAHOGANY-VENEER AND GILTWOOD “CONSTITUTION MIRROR”. Third quarter 18th century. This fine example with original two-part mirror plate within a molded giltwood slip within a rectangular mahogany-veneer frame beneath a conforming frieze, the molded and leaf-carved swan’s neck pediment terminating in floral rosettes, centering a displayed phoenix on plinth. The whole mounted with floral-and-fruit, pierce-carved filets, the pendant apron with shaped and scalloped molding. For a similar example, see plate 223, p. 99, in The Mirror Book by Herbert F. Schiffer. SIZE: Overall 68-1/4″ x 30″. CONDITION: Original gilding beneath later restorations, professionally done. Original mirror plates and backboards. Slight damages with restoration right swan’s neck facing at rosette and at juncture to mirror, right wing facing. Small repair to molding lower right corner facing. Mahogany surfaces polished with fine old patina. Very good condition overall. 9-93668 (2,000-4,000)
