IMPORTANT REGENCY SATINWOOD INLAID SLANT LID DESK PAINTED BY JOHN WHESSELL. Early 19th century. This fine example in satinwood with rosewood cross banding, paint decorated overall with floral sprays and bow-tied drapery. The lid painted with a classical country landscape featuring a portrait of the racehorse “Parasol” (born 1800) accompanied by the owner in top hat and red coat with greyhound within a floral border signed lower right in script “Whessell” (John Whessell, 1760-1824). The interior with an arrangement of pigeonholes and drawers. The center door painted with a portrait, the pigeonholes lined with embossed and decorated panels, one dated 1795 accompanied with a coat of arms. The case sides parquetry inlaid with painted fan spandrels. The whole raised on ogee bracket feet. SIZE: 42″h. x 41-1/2″w. x 19-1/2″d. CONDITION: Very fine original condition. Excellent patina.
