FINE NEW JERSEY CHIPPENDALE INLAID CHERRY TALL CASE CLOCK, DANIEL DOD/MENDHAM. Circa 1800. The swan’s neck molded pediment with radiating inlaid star terminals alternating with turned spire finials above the arched frieze with fluted pediments, the bonnet with astragal-glazed door, flanked by free-standing turned colonnettes, opening to a painted elliptical curved diorama bordered by painted spandrels of songbirds, the face marked “Dan’l Dod/Mendham” beneath an arched calendar aperture and time-and-strike apertures, a subsidiary seconds dial set above the post, all within Arabic and Roman numeral chapter rings. The eight-day brass works, unsigned, but original to dial. Base of backplate has unusual demilune cut-out. The case with arched thumbmolded door flanked by fluted engaged quarter-columns, joined to the cove-molded box base on later molded plinth, continuing to a molded bracket base with scalloped apron. Daniel Dod (1778-1823) of Mendham, New Jersey, was a postmaster/clockmaker. Very few of his clocks appear to exist today. Clock accompanied by three finials, door key, winder, two weights, and pendulum. SIZE: 90″ h. x 11-3/4″ throat w. x 10″ d. CONDITION: The dial and movement appear original, cleaned but otherwise untouched. The paint appears to have been heightened on six numerals. 9-94275 (6,000-8,000)
