LIVERPOOL CREAMWARE TRANSFER-PRINTED JUG. Transfer-printed and paint-decorated, on one side depicting portraits of Sam Adams and John Hancock beneath the tomb of George Washington with a beehive and cornucopia in the foreground within an oval border of interwoven fronds and branches and blue-heightened stars containing the following verse: “The Memory of WASHINGTON and the Proscribed PATRIOTS of AMERICA…Liberty, Virtue, Peace, Justice, and Equity to ALL Mankind”; the reverse depicting a military officer with a blue flag of the Great Seal of the United States and with cannon in foreground and symbols of American freedom within a bellflower border containing the words: “Success to AMERICA whose MILITIA is better than Standing ARMIES…May its Citizens Emulate Soldiers And its Soldiers HEROES”, written beneath is the following: “While Justice is the Throne to which we are bound to bend Our Countrys Rights and Laws we ever will defend.” Beneath the spout; paint and stencil-decorated Great Seal of the United States with 13 blue stars above the following inscription: “Peace, Commerce, and honest Friendship, with all Nations, Entangling Alliances with none – JEFFERSON”. Circa 1802. Fig. M.15, Pg 136. SIZE: 8-1/2” h. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, ME. CONDITION: The jug in as-found condition, spout broken and missing tip, base with extensive spider crack extending up sides of jug at front. Crazing in glaze with craquelure and additional minor imperfections. Stenciling and paint decorations remain in good condition with strong colors. This jug can be restored successfully.
