ITALIAN VUARGUANO STYLE CABINET. 19th century. The rectangular quarter-sawn oak polychrome paint-decorated cabinet with canted corners, the cove-molded cornice with applied carved rosettes above a pair of cupboard doors, the recessed panels carved with medieval figures and mounted with Gothic brass strap hinges and latch, the corners mounted with freestanding carved figures on Gothic pedestals, the cabinet sides with linen-fold panels, raised on frontal canted legs fronted by joined half-columns, the rear panel support with linen-fold carving, all joined to a lower shelf and raised on frontal blocked feet. SIZE: 53″ h. x 38″ overall w. x 19″ d. PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection, by descent from the estate Dr. Samuel Cox Hooker (1864, Brenchley England -1935, Brooklyn Heights, New York), a sugar chemist, magician, and art collector, to the present owner, a great-grand-daughter. Dr. Hooker retired from business at the age of 51 and returned to his childhood love of conjuring. His Impossible Rising Card Trick, which even mystified Houdini, has yet to be solved. CONDITION: Retains original surfaces with good dark patina; wear and dryness to gilt and polychrome painted surfaces, structurally intact. 9-94665 (500-700)
