NEW ENGLAND CHIPPENDALE MAPLE SLANT-LID DESK. Last quarter of the 18th century. The rectangular dovetailed case with hinged thumbmolded sloping lid, opening to a stepped interior of four valanced pigeonholes over three short drawers flanked by a bank of two drawers, the lid supported on lopers centering a long drawer above three graduated long drawers, all with thumbmolded edges; on a molded base raised on slender bracket feet with boldly shaped returns. SIZE: 40-1/2″ h. x 36″ case w. x 18-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection. Acquired from Robert Hall, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine in the 1950/60’s by the present owner’s parents. CONDITION: Desk retains original hardware and older repolished surfaces with nice patina. Replaced section behind lid lock, lid hinges replaced and moved. Top drawer with pieced section left side facing. All four drawers appear to have restoration to top molded edge. Original bracket feet and backboards; restoration to bracket feet. 9-94922 (2,500-3,500)
