UNSIGNED (Continental School, 19th/20th Century) PORTRAIT OF ALFRED VON TERPITZ. Alfred Von Terpitz (March 19, 1849-March 6, 1930) was a German Admiral, Secretary of State of the Imperial Naval Office, the powerful administrative branch of the Kaiserliche Marine from 1897 until 1916. Oil on canvas half portrait of a man with mustache and shaped beard. He wears a fur collared military jacket with red epaulets. His inner brass button coat is decorated with medals of merit including Order of the Red Eagle, Iron Cross and what appears to be the Pour le Merit amongst others. Housed in a magnificent period gilt frame with nut and flower clusters in corners and textured gilt interior. An oval bead decorated window with burgundy velvet matte. CANVAS SIZE: Rectangle is 30” x 25”. SIGHT SIZE: Oval is 27-1/4” x 22”. CONDITION: Replaced stretcher, relined with inpainting. Restored, very good. 9-74374 LG (2,500-4,500)
