LUDOLF BACKHUYSEN (Dutch 1631-1709) SHIPS AT ANCHOR. Outstanding early watercolor is monogrammed with initials in right corner, left corner has what might be a location. Scene shows two principal boats side by side with several other boats in background. Calm sea with white clouds and blue sky. We believe this to be a study for a major oil painting. It has penciled grid lines approximately 1″ both horizontally and vertically. The flag flying off the main ship indicates Rotterdam port. Remarkable detail by a renowned artist who is best known for his ships on violent seas. SIGHT SIZE: 8 1/2″ h x 13 1/4″ w.
