*WINCHESTER MODEL 1895 CARTRIDGE TEST RIFLE. Cal. 30 Army (30-40). Musket length with 28” tapered round bbl still in the white, unpolished. It has a German silver pedestal front sight and is drilled and tapped on the top for a rear musket sight. It has usual markings “nickel steel” bbl “especially for smokeless powder”, with the caliber marking and “WP” proof mark. It has the addition of a hand stamped date to the right side of the chamber area “8-25-16”. The left side of the receiver is mounted with a Lyman 21 long side sight. It has a musket buttstock with smooth steel buttplate with trap and a modified musket forearm with single band that has a sling loop. The buttstock also has a sling base. It is accompanied by a packet of information from the Winchester ammunition historian at WCF Publication, Rockford, IL. This rifle is listed as having been in inventory at Winchester as of March 11, 1957. Another page indicates that it was “In book as S.V. gun, 3-57”. This indicates that it was a standard velocity test rifle used at the ballistic laboratory to determine average velocity from a test sample of ammunition pulled from the production line. These were referred to as “Standard Velocity Check Guns”. SN 68180. CONDITION: About fine. Bbl, as noted, is still in the white and retains a silver gray patina. The receiver retains 88-90% strong bright original blue. The buttstock is sound and is considerably battered on the top and bottom by the buttplate from being clamped in a machine rest for the tests. The forearm, apparently modified from original musket length, retains a light oil finish. Bright shiny bore. This is a rare opportunity to own a genuine, documented test rifle. 4-49990 JR185 (1,000-2,000)
