GEORGE III JAPANNED OAK TALL-CASE CLOCK, “JAMES NICOL CANONGATE”. Mid-18th century. The domed molded cornice above the astragal-glazed door with notched corners, fitted to the conforming bonnet, the door opening to a brushed silvered dial with black enamel Roman numeral chapter ring centering a seconds dial above apertures for time, strike, and calendar, centered by pierced brass filigreed spandrels cast with urns and scrolling vinery beneath a central silvered rondel etched in script the name “James Nicol Canongate” (circa 1740, Edinburgh, Scotland) flanked by scrolling cast dolphins. The brass works unmarked. The rectangular waisted case with tombstone-arched molded door fitted on a cove molded box base raised on bracket feet. The door chinoiserie-decorated, the case with gilt-decorated guilloches and gilt fernery. Weights, pendulum and key present. SIZE: 83″ h. x 14″ throat w. x 8-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From an eastern Connecticut home. CONDITION: Retains original surfaces with dark craquelure; works appear original to case, backboards and bracket feet the same. 9-92694 (3,000-5,000)
