EARLY AMERICAN CARVED AND POLYCHROME PAINTED DOVETAILED PINE SEAMAN’S CHEST. The rectangular hinged top with molded edge fitted to the conforming dovetailed chest, the front panel relief carved and polychrome painted, depicting a clipper ship at sea, flying an American flag, a red, white and blue five pointed star in each upper corner, the ends with knotted becket handles painted red, white and blue on a plinth base. PROVENANCE: Grandson of John D. Rockefeller. SIZE: 15-1/2” h x 37-1/2” l x 16-1/2” d. CONDITION: Overall very good condition, showing normal wear. One minor shrinkage crack in top with some water stains. 9-74468 SM (3,000-5,000)
