WINCHESTER 1ST MODEL 2ND ISSUE MODEL 1873 LEVER-ACTION MUSKET. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). Standard musket with 30” round bbl, square-base front sight and 900 yard ladder musket sight. It has a full magazine and full-length forearm with 3 bands. The receiver has an impressed thumb print mortised dust cover. It has straight grain wood with straight stock and musket buttplate with trap. It has sling loops on the middle band and the stock. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this musket as having been shipped May 20, 1878 with 69 other arms to order #11781. One of the few 1st Model muskets known. It is from the James D. Gordon collection and is pictured in his book “Winchester’s New Model of 1873-A Tribute” pg 172, 222, 270, 488 and 491. SN 29975. CONDITION: About good. Traces of the original finish remain on bbl and magazine tube in the very sheltered areas with the balance a dark brown patina with occasional crusted rust. The receiver is a light silver-brown patina with fine pitting and a few spots of crusted rust. Wood is sound, much battered, with a hand-rubbed patina.
