ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN HALLEY BELLAMY (1836-1914) KITTERY AND PORTSMOUTH CARVED EAGLE TRANSOM DOOR PLAQUE WITH “DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP” BANNER. The carved and gilded eagle with red, white, and blue banner with three incised stars. PROVENANCE: Exhibited in the “American Signs and Symbols” exhibition as “Attributed to John Bellamy” Jan.-Nov. 1964 at the Taft Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio. NOTE: Accompanying the eagle is a copy of the museum’s catalog which shows this eagle on the first page photographed and is listed as item #28 with a provenance of “Collection of Mr. Richard E. Guggenheim, Cincinnati”. SIZE: 45-1/2” l. CONDITION: Original dry surface, original paint on banner with original nails. Repair to proper right wingtip (split) and to proper right tip of banner, two splits at nail hole. 9-90603 HP (40,000-60,000)
