STEVENS POPE IDEAL SCHUTZEN RIFLE. Cal. Pope 33-40. Fine Model 49 rifle on a 44 action with 28” oct to round bbl about No. 3 weight. Case colored receiver, dbl set triggers, long loop lever, schnable tip splinter forearm with palm rest and Schutzen style heavy perch belly stock with deep cheek piece and Pope style aluminum Schutzen buttplate. Bbl has standard Stevens markings on top while the bottom flat is marked with Pope markings “21/141/269”. Bbl serial number (6680 under the forearm) does not match the receiver. Top flat is drilled and tapped for scope locks, which contain a J.W. Fecker small tube target scope. Bore has typical Pope left hand twist rifling. Muzzle is drilled for a Pope matching numbered 4-hole false muzzle, which accompanies, and is also accompanied by a reproduction brass Pope style bullet starter. Also accompanied by two targets reportedly fired from this rifle. This gun will be featured in Warren Greatback’s upcoming book on Pope bbls and rifles. SN 9503. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains about 90% original blue. Front sight is missing and there is an extra dovetail in the top flat through the bbl address. Receiver retains 60-70% faded original case colors and the lever 35-40% turning brown. Forearm is fine and retains traces of original finish. Buttstock is sound and retains about 90% thin original finish with fine crazing. Brilliant shiny bore, fine optics. 4-48493 JR543 (3,000-5,000)
