JOHN TRUMBULL (American, 1756-1843) PORTRAIT OF GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON. Important large oil on canvas 3/4 portrait of General George Washington. Washington stands with one hand at hip, other hand holding a scroll which has written “By John Trumbull May 1793”. He wears a red military jacket with fancy gold trim, a vest and white collar shirt. His head looking at viewer in a Gilbert Stuart type rendition. A red curtain is seen on left side with a grayish green background. Housed in a modern French style gesso decorated frame with gilt liner. Back of stretcher is a J. Chenue London French packer label. We believe his uniform represent the Virginia Regiment. SIZE: 44” x 35-1/4”. CONDITION: Painting has an old relining with a more contemporary patch which when viewed under blacklight has corresponding inpainting. There is an area of approximately 1-1/2” along the bottom center border going into the right corner and up the right side which has been inpainted. This does not include any of the signature area. Remainder of the painting fluoresces a light green which does not allow any prior restoration to be seen. 9-73715 FPD (20,000-40,000)
