2ND MODEL BROWN BESS TYPE FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS. Cal. big. Fine early Revolutionary period Blunderbuss, probably sea service, with 15-5/8” iron barrel with muzzle flared to 1-7/8” having very thick walls. No markings are visible on the lockplate, which is standard of the period, 6-1/4” long, slight banana shaped with a short teat at the rear. It has gooseneck hammer with tapered squared tang and raised carving around the tang. The sideplate is flat brass, 5-1/2” long, including the 2nd model type rear projection. The triggerguard is brass with a simple round finial, and the butt plate is smooth brass with a short round tang. It has a single brass guide with an iron ramrod that is possibly original. CONDITION: The iron retains a gray/brown patina with scattered moderate to heavy rust pitting. The forestock has several grain cracks and bug holes at the tip and is missing several splinters and pieces of wood. The rest of the stock has a few scattered bug holes, otherwise appears to be sound. Mechanics are fine. 4-48929 JR722 (1,750-2,750)
