AMERICAN CARVED AND PAINTED TOBACCO STORE COUNTER FIGURE. 2nd half 19th century. Carved in the manner of Brooks and Robe, depicting a Native American with feathered headdress, tunic, robe and moccasins, continuing to a square plinth with three sides painted “TOBACCO”, “CIGARS”, “SNUFF”. One of the better examples of its type that we have seen. SIZE: 33-1/2″ h. x 10-1/2″ w. x 9-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: The Estate of Chad Richards, Camden, Maine. CONDITION: On original plinth base. Carving appears to retain early, if not original, polychrome paint; the words “TOBACCO”, “CIGARS”, “SNUFF” probably a later addition. Proper left foot with early repair, shrinkage crack proper left side of torso, all surfaces with very good patina, some crazing and crackle in painted surfaces. Surface chips and paint losses throughout plinth, left arm, and proper right side of face; shrinkage crack left side of plinth facing. Carving displays normal and expected minor losses and damage due to wear and tear. Very good overall. 9-94698 (8,000-12,000)
